This is pre-app light painting, where you manipulate the camera settings and use lights to create an image. An extended or prolonged exposure is necessary to get this effect.

The faces are light from the glow of the lights, but because it is an extended exposure in low light, the details appear smeared from the movements.

Lincoln Tunnel

On our NYC Fine Arts trip I shot this from the front seat on the bus as we went in the Lincoln Tunnel. I set my camera on a 4-second shutter speed, the result was a tracing of the lights from the cars and tunnel.

Working with an extended shutter speed, we set up in the dark on one side of the table and flashed the group with a flashlight. We left the shutter open, hurried in the dark to the other side of the table and did a quick flashlight flash again. The result is the duplicate image of us talking to ourselves.
